Ranking Cinema Snacks; From Overrated to Absolutely Essential

I do enjoy the occasional trip to the cinema, although if I'm being honest, I'm much more of a home bunny when it comes to movie nights. There's just something about curling up on the sofa with a cosy blanket, your favourite film, and the freedom to pause whenever you fancy another snack!

That said, there is something special about going to the cinema. The huge screen, incredible sound system and that excitement when the lights go down all make it an experience. But let's be honest... while I'm there for the film, I'm also a food girl, so one of my first thoughts is always...

"What snacks are we having?"

Now, before I get into my rankings, I know this first opinion might divide people…Popcorn; Overrated! Please don't come for me!

I know popcorn is the classic cinema snack, and I do enjoy it. My favourite way is having a mix of sweet and salty popcorn, but there's one little addition that takes it to the next level... A bag of Maltese's mixed in.

Trust me on this one! The chocolate melts ever so slightly from the warmth of the popcorn, and it's honestly a game changer. Even so, popcorn just doesn't deserve the number one spot for me. It's nice, but I don't think it's the cinema snack everyone makes it out to be.

Nachos; The Undisputed Champion, Now this is what I'm talking about. If I'm going to the cinema, chances are I'm ordering nachos.The warm, crispy tortilla chips covered in that ridiculously tasty melted cheese sauce are absolutely mouthwatering. I don't know what it is about cinema nacho cheese, but it just tastes better than anywhere else. For me, nachos are the ultimate cinema snack and definitely deserve the top spot.

Ice Blast; Refreshing… Eventually! An Ice Blast is almost a tradition whenever I go to the cinema. I'm not fussy about the flavour either, I happily mix them together. My only complaint…They're so cold that you spend the first ten minutes trying to drink them through the straw without giving yourself brain freeze! Sometimes you have to wait for them to melt a little before you can properly enjoy them.

Still, once they do, they're definitely one of my favourite cinema treats.

Sweets; Nice, But not my first choice, Who doesn't enjoy a bag of sweets during a film? They're easy to nibble on throughout the movie, and there are plenty of options to choose from. But personally, they're never my first choice. If I'm picking one snack, sweets usually lose out to nachos every single time.

Why Are Cinema Snacks So Expensive? Let's talk about the elephant in the room… Cinema prices. I completely understand that cinemas need to make money, but some of the prices can be eye-watering. It always surprises me how much extra you're paying for snacks that you could buy in the supermarket for a fraction of the price.

If I'm paying cinema prices, I want something that feels like a proper treat, something with a bit of a wow factor, not just a packet of sweets I could have picked up on the way in.

More Vegetarian Options, Please! One thing that really disappoints me is the lack of vegetarian choices. Plant based Hot dogs would probably rank quite highly for me... if I could actually eat one! Unfortunately, most cinemas still don't offer a plant-based hot dog option, which feels like a missed opportunity.

The same goes for Pick 'n' Mix. I wish there were more vegetarian-friendly sweets available because quite a few traditional sweets contain gelatine.

These days, restaurants, cafés and even fast-food chains have really embraced different dietary choices, yet cinemas seem to have been much slower to catch up. Hopefully that's something we'll see change in the future.

🥇 1. Nachos with Cheese Sauce – The undisputed winner.

🥈 2. Ice Blast – Worth the brain freeze.

🥉 3. Popcorn with Maltese's mixed in! – Much better than plain popcorn.

4. Sweets – Nice to have, but not my first pick.

5. Hot Dogs – They'd rank much higher if cinemas finally offered a proper plant-based option.

At the end of the day, everyone has their own favourite cinema snack, and that's part of the fun. Whether you're team popcorn, nachos or sweets, a trip to the cinema just doesn't feel complete without something tasty to enjoy alongside the film.
